Gray cast with lamellar graphite
Gray cast with lamellar graphite is distinguished by its good compressive strength, muffling ability, machinability, castability and low cost. Good castability enables the casting of complex geometrical shapes, the muffling ability enables the cast’s use as gearbox cases, engine cylinder blocks, machine casings and other machine components. The microstructure of the material consists of graphite, extracted in the form of lamellae and a ferritic/pearlitic metal matrix. The mechanical properties mostly depend on the quantity, shape and disposition of the graphite. The graphite lamellae interrupt the matrix with a an incising effect and therefore the tensile strength and tenacity of the material are low.
